Penstemon newberryi is a bushy perennial subshrub that reaches a height between 12 to 30 centimeters. The finely toothed leaf blades are 1 to 4 centimeters long. The glandular magenta flowers are 2-3 centimeters long, and the flowers are tubular or funnel shaped. The showy flowers are pollinated by both hummingbird and insects. The CPP four letter code for this species is PENE.
This species is currently monitored at Lassen Volcanic National Park and Sequoia National Park.
